Everything I Need To Know I Learned From Matchbox 20
1:19 PMI was talking with my cute friend Janet the other day, and I'm only mildly embarrassed with how much I like Matchbox 20.
And I was only halfway kidding when I sent this to Emily the other day for her serious consideration.
All of this definitely makes me feel like a product of the 1990s.
Yaaaaay.
No matter how someone protests, if they are a) talking to themselves in public, b) have imaginary shadow friends, and c) hearing voices, you should have some major red flags.
"Unwell"
Stop trying to kid yourself, Rob Thomas. You are definitely insane.
But seriously -- how is such a mellow, chill song about such a crazy person???
Naivety and dreaming big is much more fun than being realistic and boring.
"Real World"
Be a superhero! Be your own boss! Be a weatherman? Whatever you want to be, live in your dream world and expect huge things from your life. You deserve it.
Don't let reality or your current circumstances get you down or tell you what you can't do.
End of rant.
True compassion and concern doesn't go away, even when they're faced with greater challenges.
"3am"
Now, I've heard this song is about his mom struggling with cancer, but I always thought it was just about this crazy, pessimistic, worry-wart, insomniac girl. Regardless, there's a woman, with a crappy life, who's still worried about you. She wants the best for you, even with such a negative outlook on her own life.
But in reality, the best way to help others is to first get yourself in a good place. Once you've conquered your demons and fought your personal battles, you are much better equipped to be there for others.
Favorite line: "She thinks that happiness is a mat that sits on her doorway."
... I kind of want a "Happiness" doormat.
Sometimes big city glam isn't all it's cracked up to be.
"Bright Lights"
Don't get me wrong, sometimes it definitely is (see, um, any of my posts about living in DC), but if you're moving on or out just to have "real life experiences" in the big city, you may want to reconsider your life choices.
Just because you're beautiful doesn't mean you can be a crazy person. Because he's not going to put up with your crazy anymore.
"Last Beautiful Girl"
Rats.
You can't be mean to people just for fun.
"She's So Mean"
Double rats.
Okay, just kidding. I think I already knew this one. I still kind of love this song.
... Why do I love songs about crazy girls??
Everyone has those loooooong (usually post-breakup) days.
"Long Day"
Not to sound too redundant (the song is called Long Day for goodness sake), but sometimes I tend to drag things out, dwell on things, whatever you want to call it. I think we all have those days where it takes all your energy to get out of bed in the morning, and best part of your day is getting to go back to bed that night.
That is this song.
Side note: This was also recently added to my "I just need a good cry" playlist. It's, like, kind of angry, kind of sad, pretty much just great.
PS I totally wish I could carry hope in my pocket in real life. That would be awesome.
Rob Thomas thinks a lot.
"If You're Gone"
Like 2/3 of the lines in this song start with "I think." I really wish he knew more and thought less.
But seriously, this is mostly just a cute get-back-together song.
Also the horns in this song remind me of like an old school Chicago song, which melts my heart a lot.
<3 Chicago and those glorious horns.
The end is coming!
"How Far We've Come"
Zombie apocalypse.
Are you ready?
Favorite line: "The cars are moving like a half a mile an hour." Just because I feel like this is something I would say in real life (I exaggerate 500% of my life).
EINTKILF originally comes from HelloGiggles and the hilariously fun Jess Tholmer
